About UsWho are we?Established in 1995 by Amanda Hill, the Sydney Women's Baseball League Incorporated (the League) is celebrating thirteen years of providing a baseball competition for women of metropolitan Sydney. The baseball competition has been developed from a small group of enthusiasts in an inner city park to a competitive 10-team based League to rival that of larger organisations. Whilst the key focus of the League is participation and enjoyment, the League is structured to ensure skilled players are challenged and beginners' skills are developed. Where do we play?Moore Park, opposite The Entertainment Quater. Who is involved?Women of all ages and skills come along every Sunday in winter to have a swing, get their eye in and test out their arm. Whilst we have many competitive players who will give you a good run for your money, some of our members are new to the sport, perhaps having only ever played softball or cricket. Our players are a diverse group from a range of backgrounds and experiences. Although we are based at Moore Park, near The Entertainment Quater, women have been known to travel from all corners of the greater Sydney region to join us - spanning the Northern Beaches, the west, the Shire and the Hills. Also, if you are injured or have just put your cleats out to pasture, the League is always looking for coaches and umpires to help out the League. Development of the LeagueIn recent years, the League has concentrated on developing the skill base of the League - training umpires; attracting experienced coaches; conducting pitching and batting clinics and challenging other competitions in the broader region with "All-star" games. Development and enhancement of the League will continue this year, including the proposed funding of accreditation for Level 1 coaches and umpiring and further capital investment in equipment. The League is also entering a representative team in the inaugural Women's Club Challenge at Bass Hill to give our more competitive players a chance to shine. Who runs it?The League is administered by an enthusiastic and experienced Committee, elected by members at the 2006 Annual General Meeting. The Committee is responsible for organising the draw and teams; ensuring grounds are available; that players are insured and that all money is appropriately dealt with for the development of the League. The League was also incorporated in 2004, to offer greater protection to our volunteer directors and so that the association is managed in a professional and transparent manner. What's the vibe? The League prides itself on its friendly, relaxed and healthily competitive vibe. Every Sunday, rain or shine, the Committee ensures that the BBQ is fired-up and that players and spectators are well-fed. Friends and family are always welcome to come along to support the games, cheer on the teams and to spend a beautiful afternoon in the winter sun. When? The League is a Winter Competition, playing between April and September. Four games are played each Sunday, across two diamonds. Games start at 10:30 12:30pm and 2:30pm, and are played for 1½ hours. The draw for the games will be published in early April. An Open Day is being held in 2006, so you can put on a glove or show off your skills in the batter's box. The League will host a training day so you can have a refresher of the rules and learn the basics of the game, or meet your new team-mates. Season commences in April. The season is due to end in September, with our grand final to be played also in September. We do not play on the weekend of the Queen's birthday. How much does it cost? All players are required to pay player registration and insurance. The players' registration fees cover the hire of grounds and the purchase and maintenance of equipment. It is expected that fees this year will be not more than $120. Many of the teams have established uniforms, and generally players will make a contribution to the costs of the outfit. It is also preferred if players have their own gloves, but the League has some spares for use also. SocialThe League provides a great social vibe away from the diamond and is the perfect way to meet new friends. Apart from the weekly BBQ at the games, the Committee organises several social events throughout the season. In recent years events have included harbour cruises, pool nights, and vineyard trips. Awards nightThe season culminates in the Awards night. This is always a great night where the prizes are awarded for the League premiers and runner-ups...and of course the "wooden-spooners." Each year we also offer the acclaimed, Most Valued Players; Players' Player and the Rookie of the Year. Unsuspecting players may also get hauled up for best "stack" or best injury during the season!
